Doctrine and Covenants 133

President Harold B. Lee said that Doctrine and Covenants 101 and 133 provide a “step-by-step recounting of events leading up to the coming of the Savior” (“Admonitions for the Priesthood of God,”Ensign, Jan. 1973, 106).

Doctrine and Covenants 133:15

Elder Neil L. Andersen:

“One of your important responsibilities is to help prepare the world for the Second Coming of the Savior. …

“Your mission will be a sacred opportunity to bring others to Christ and help prepare for the Second Coming of the Savior. …

“… The world is being prepared for the Second Coming of the Savior in large measure because of the Lord’s work through His missionaries” (“Preparing the World for the Second Coming,” Ensign or Liahona,May 2011, 49, 50, 51).

Doctrine and Covenants 133:20–22

When the Lord returns, He will make appearances to specific groups and then appear in great power, majesty, and glory—in such a manner that all the world will see Him (see D&C 88:95; 101:23–25; 133:40–42, 48–51). Prophets have mentioned four appearances of the Lord as part of His Second Coming:

The appearance at the temple in the city of New Jerusalem (see D&C 84:1–5; 97:10, 15–16; 133:2).

The appearance at Adam-ondi-Ahman (see Daniel 7:9–14; D&C 107:53–57; 116:1).

The appearance at the Mount of Olives (see Zechariah 14:1–9; D&C 45:48–53; 133:20).

Doctrine and Covenants 133:26–34

Elder Bruce R. McConkie:

“The Lost Tribes are not lost unto the Lord. In their northward journeyings they were led by prophets and inspired leaders. They had their Moses and their Lehi, were guided by the spirit of revelation, kept the law of Moses, and carried with them the statutes and judgments which the Lord had given them in ages past. They were still a distinct people many hundreds of years later, for the resurrected Lord visited and ministered among them following his ministry on this continent among the Nephites. (3 Ne. 16:1–4; 17:4.) Obviously he taught them in the same way and gave them the same truths which he gave his followers in Jerusalem and on the American continent; and obviously they recorded his teachings, thus creating volumes of scripture comparable to the Bible and Book of Mormon. (2 Ne. 29:12–14.)

“In due course the Lost Tribes of Israel will return and come to the children of Ephraim to receive their blessings. This great gathering will take place under the direction of the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, for he holds the keys. … Keys are the right of presidency, the power to direct; and by this power the Lost Tribes will return, with ‘their prophets’ and their scriptures to ‘be crowned with glory, even in Zion, by the hands of the servants of the Lord, even the children of Ephraim.’ (D. & C. 133:26–35.)” (Mormon Doctrine, 2nd ed. Doctrine and Covenants 133:41–45

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland:

“To any of you who are troubled about the future …

“God expects you to have enough faith and determination and enough trust in Him to keep moving, keep living, keep rejoicing. In fact, He expects you not simply to facethe future (that sounds pretty grim and stoic); He expects you to embrace and shape the future—to love it and rejoice in it and delight in your opportunities.

“God is anxiously waiting for the chance to answer your prayers and fulfill your dreams, just as He always has. But He can’t if you don’t pray, and He can’t if you don’t dream. In short, He can’t if you don’t believe” (“Terror, Triumph, and a Wedding Feast” [Church Educational System devotional, Sept. 12, 2004], 3, speeches.byu.edu).

Doctrine and Covenants 134:5

President Howard W. Hunter:

“We are charged with the duty of sustaining and upholding the laws of the land. It is dishonest to intentionally violate the law. It doesn’t make any difference how one may feel personally about the fairness or justness of the rules which have been established by society, one’s duty is to respect and sustain the law” (in The Teachings of Howard W. Hunter,ed. Clyde J. Williams [1997], 164).

“The sovereign laws of the state must be sustained, and persons living under those laws must obey them for the good of the whole. In this regard The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints takes a strong position. One of the fundamental tenets of its faith is clearly stated in these words: ‘We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law’ [Articles of Faith 1:12]” (The Teachings of Howard W. Hunter, 165).

Doctrine and Covenants 134:5–6

Elder James E. Talmage:

“In the case of a conflict between the requirements made by the revealed word of God, and those imposed by the secular law, which of these authorities would the members of the Church be bound to obey? …

“Pending the overruling by [God] in favor of religious liberty, it is the duty of the saints to submit themselves to the laws of their country. Nevertheless, they should use every proper method, as citizens or subjects of their several governments, to secure for themselves and for all men the boon of freedom in religious service. It is not required of them to suffer without protest [the] imposition by lawless persecutors, or through the operation of unjust laws; but their protests should be offered in legal and proper order. The saints have practically demonstrated their acceptance of the doctrine that it is better to suffer evil than to do wrong by purely human opposition to unjust authority” (The Articles of Faith, 12th ed. [1924], 422, 423]).
