In a revelation to Joseph Smith, Oliver Cowdery, and John Whitmer, the Lord said that at “the next conference … it [would] be made known what [they should] do” (D&C 26:1). This revelation was given in July 1830. At a conference held in September 1830, Joseph Smith “was appointed by the voice of the Conference to receive and write Revelations & Commandments for this Church” (in Far West Record: Minutes of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1830–1844, ed. Donald Q. Cannon and Lyndon W. Cook [1983], 3).
